Zombie

As I am inundated with the arrival of Halloween decorations in all the stores and themed commercials, I can’t help but look at the portrayals of zombies and think, “I feel ya, buddy.” The majority of 2020 has felt like I’ve been living in an alternate universe, and I don’t always feel fully present. Sometimes I am grateful for this sensation of blocking things out and remaining mentally “out to lunch,” but it is also concerning when I don’t recognize myself. As a mom of young children, I am used to running on little sleep, but I am not used to such a slow cognitive recall.

When faced with what seems an unsurmountable challenge, the age old advice is often to tackle it one step at a time. While I sometimes feel like I am putting one foot in front of the other with my arms erected in front of me as I limp and groan through the day, I am nevertheless moving forward. My zombie brain is still functioning and daily tasks can run on autopilot. However, autopilot is not how we are meant to live. We should be in tune with the world and people around us, appreciating God’s hand in every aspect of our lives.

While the majority of 2020 has felt like an absolute nightmare, I wouldn’t dare go as far as to describe it as “hellish.” Hell is eternal separation from God, and God has been with me every step of the way. The Lord even encourages us to enjoy our lives. While the ultimate goal is for God’s children to live in unity with him in heaven, He wants us to enjoy all the wonders of this world, even though it pales in comparison.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

John 10:10
We made sure to document the rarity of being out after dark and kid free.

This week I had the opportunity to partake in some of the pre-covid activities that bring joy to my life. I even got to enjoy a kid free dinner out with my girlfriends where we got to catch up on life and laugh and support each other through our own trials. Breaking bread (and chips & salsa) together with my sisters in Christ is part of the fullness I think Jesus was talking about when he told his disciples that he came so that we could have life. He wasn’t just coming to combat the enemy who seeks to destroy us, but to give us lives that are full and pleasurable.

If you are feeling like a zombie just making your way through 2020 and wishing things will get better in the new year, it might be time to stop and assess your situation. Life isn’t supposed to be something we “just get through.” Are there areas of your life that the enemy might be trying to destroy? Change your mindset to focus on the good. Ask the Lord in to help you with your life right now and your attitude. Tomorrow is not promised, so set your sights on living life to the full today.
